A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, the clear, protective outer layer of the eye. It is considered an ophthalmic emergency and requires immediate medical attention to prevent vision loss or serious complications. Recognizing the symptoms early is crucial for prompt and effective treatment.

Common Symptoms of a Corneal Ulcer Include:

  • Severe Eye Pain
Intense pain is one of the hallmark symptoms, often worsening with blinking or eye movement.
  • Redness of the Eye
Significant redness, particularly around the cornea, is common.
  • Excessive Tearing or Eye Discharge
The eye may produce more tears or a thick, sometimes yellow or green, discharge.
  • Blurred Vision
Vision can become hazy or blurred, especially if the ulcer is centrally located.
  • Sensitivity to Light (Photophobia)
Patients often experience discomfort in bright light.
  • Foreign Body Sensation
A feeling that something is stuck in the eye, even when there is nothing visible.
  • Swollen Eyelids
Eyelid swelling may accompany the eye inflammation.
  • White or Gray Spot on the Cornea
In some cases, a visible white or grayish area can be seen on the normally clear cornea.

Important Note:
If you experience any of these symptoms, particularly if they develop rapidly, you should seek immediate evaluation by an ophthalmologist. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent scarring, vision impairment, or even permanent vision loss.
